Part Three: Balisong Techniquesby Nilo Limpin
Nilo Limpin is a master of the balisong. The late Punong Guro Edgar Sulite, founder of the much vaunted LAMECO system, acknowledged Master Nilo Limpin as his instructor in the balisong in one of his books.
The opening and closing techniques of the balisong as demonstrated here by Master Nilo Limpin here are for illustration purposes only, and not for instructional purposes. It is highly recommended that, if you want to be proficient or spectacular with the opening and closing, and use of the balisong, you train with a proficient guro (teacher) of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) who is an expert with this particular weapon. Warning: Not all guros of FMA areproficient enough to teach the use of this weapon.
In the United States, balisong masters include my friends Punong Guro Mat Marinas of Pananandata, GatPuno Abon Baet of Garimot Arnis, GM Topher Ricketts of Kali Ilustrisimo, and others. In the Philippines, there are quite a few of them. If you need recommendations, email Master Godofredo Fajardo of IMAFP for his recommendations. He may be reached at godoffai@yahoo.com .
Another warning: Some states in the United States consider the balisong as a deadly or illegal weapon, sometimes classified as a “gravity” knife just like a switchblade. Mere possession can land you in jail, or definitely in some legal trouble. So be sure to check your local laws regarding the possession and carry of this weapon.
